F I T 2 0 1 8 - 2 0 1 9 7 DERMATOLOGIST Dr. Courtney Schadt Residency Program Director of Dermatology, University of Louisville What are some of the newest findings or current research in dermatology? "I don't know if this is anything new, but the most important thing is people need to make sure they incorporate protection in their daily routine. We do know that sun protection, whether it's with hats or SPF clothing, is very important. Sunscreen, I think the most important thing is to use at least an SPF 30. Incorporate that into your daily routine, using a daily facial lo- tion and reapplying it every couple of hours. "I think a lot of people don't think about that they're driving in a car ev- ery day and they're getting a lot of sun through the windows. The car windows don't offer any sun protection. I see a lot of patients who have more sun damage or pre-cancers on the left side of their face, on their neck, their left hand and left arm. What I tell patients is to keep sunscreen in their car and not forget about that. I think a lot of patients only think about putting sun- block on for their big vacation on the beach. But for our everyday lives, we're all getting lots of sun. I think it's also important that we all take some vita- min D supplements; a lot of people are vitamin D insufficient. It's really hard to predict how much sun you need to get an adequate amount. So just adding a supplement every day for vitamin D is going to be helpful for that." What are some common ailments? "I see a lot of skin cancer. I diagnose a lot of melanoma and other types of skin cancer that are common, called basal-cell carcinoma. I see a lot of acne and psoriasis and eczema. Those are probably the most common things." Are there any ailments particular to this area? "I think unfortunately there's still a lot of use of suntanning in Louisville. I think Sun Tan City is headquartered in E-town, and there's another popu- lar chain in Louisville. We see a lot of people in tanning beds. You increase your risk of melanoma and skin cancer. I think that's a problem that's continu- ing in Louisville." What are some body areas we tend to forget to sunscreen? "Your ears and your cheeks and your neck get a lot of sun." At what point should someone seek treatment? "If a patient has anything that's an 'ugly duckling' on their skin, something that stands out from all their other moles, or is changing, won't heal, is bleeding or itchy, I would recommend that they be seen." What do you do to stay healthy? "I always wear sunblock every morning in my facial lotion and my makeup. I spend a lot of time outdoors running, and I always put a sport sunscreen on all exposed areas before I run. I wear a hat a lot when I'm outside during the day. I think a lot of people also think about anti-aging products. I use a lot of Neutrogena regenerist, Olay regenerist product that has retinol in it. A lot of people are interested in anti- aging products, so retinol products are helpful at night." Besides prescriptions, what do you keep in your medicine cabinet? "Earplugs, because I go to a ton of music festivals and I'm super paranoid about losing my hearing."
