3 4 F I T 2 0 1 8 - 2 0 1 9 The days of "The Old Folks Home" are long gone It's surprising that people still refer to a modern retirement community as an "old folk's home." In reality it should be a place where older adults continue to grow rather than just grow old! And at an established community with a good reputation like Episcopal Church Home, not only do they strive to provide the best quality of life possible for all lifestyles, residents will never be asked to leave for financial reasons. That's not a promise all retirement communities can make. Add on quality health care availability, wellness programs, social events, transportation, good food, new friends, seminars, volunteer opportunities, etc. and you have a retirement living option that enables many older adults to live longer, healthier, and more purposeful lives. And knowing that their parents are safe and surrounded by experts in the field of senior living brings peace of mind to the adult children in the family as well. Here are some questions you should ask when considering a retirement community: • Are they a not-for-profit organization where their priority is to reinvest resources back into their community or are they a for-profit where their priority is to pay owners and shareholders? • Do they offer all levels of care including independent living, personal care, long term nursing and short term rehab care? • Do they offer memory support both at the personal care level and the 24-hour skilled nursing level? • What are their clinical staff-to-resident ratios? • If in the future you outlive your financial resources will they ask you to leave, and is it the same policy for all levels of care? • Do they accept Medicare and Medicaid in their short term rehab and long term care centers? • Who are the owners, are there local people on the board of directors and do they have any residents on the board? • Do they have a long track record in the local market of quality care.
