F I T 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8 7 Age 17, senior at Presentation Academy, softball team captain, committed to play college softball at Dartmouth How did you get started with softball? "My dad put me in tee-ball when I was four and I've been playing since then." How do you train? "I work out with my team three days a week. We work out in the weight room. I also have a personal trainer that I go to two times a week and we work on strength. It's more cardio here with my team, but with my trainer we do more weights and focus on getting stronger, so I can hit the ball farther and get more fit." What position do you play? "I'm a catcher. The mitt." Any injuries? "Yeah, I did something to my elbow. We're not really sure. I was supposed to go to the doctor today, but they texted me and told me that I didn't need to come in. So hopefully that's good news, but I've been out for about two weeks." ABBY SHIPLEY Do you take any measures to avoid injury? "Most of the time we do a lot of stretching before practice. We don't try to do anything right off the bat that's super-strenuous. Other than that, we drink a lot of water. I drink water all the time. My injuries aren't from not stretching; this was just like a freak thing. I don't even know how it happened. But stretching is the most important thing." Do you try to maintain a healthy diet? "I'm really bad at that part. If I had a really good diet, I would be the most fit person ever. I try to eat healthy, more fruits and vegetables, but it really doesn't work out for me because I'm so addicted to carbs. I really love carbs, like breads and pastas. So that's one of my struggling points with the whole fitness thing. I try to stay away from soda. I maybe have one a week."
