F I T 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8 1 3 What sort of exercises or classes do you take? "I take aerobics, mainly. Then I walk and lift some weights. I love my aerobics class. They have a really good class here. We do step and the instructor does all kinds of things to make us think, like change the step real quick. She keeps us on our toes. She even told us, 'I'm amazed at the way you all move and the way you pick things up at your age.'" Age 78, Baptist Milestone member ANNA SHOWALTER Do you keep a specific diet? "Absolutely. I have some low- blood-sugar problems, so about 10 years ago, I gave up all sugar. I haven't had anything except natural sugar in that length of time because it made me sick. I eat my breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner and snack. And I do that every day. I have oatmeal and berries for breakfast. Then, about 10 o'clock, I have a little salad with baked chicken. I have to eat a lot of protein. My afternoon snack is apples and cheese. And then my dinner. Before I go to bed, I have some apples and cheese. So I eat a little bit every three to four hours. "I feel like I pack for a school kid. I have food with me every time I go out. I never know where I'm going to be, and I can't be without it. So I just carry food with me wherever I go." Has your fitness routine changed since you've gotten older? "If anything, I keep to it more rigid than I ever did. Because as you get older, you need it more. I know that my mother had some dementia, and I feel like this is keeping me from it. I go three times a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I just think it's one of the most important things I do. I know that if I miss, I get lethargic or I don't feel good. I'm not as up. I know that's what I get from the exercise and the eating. People tell me I look young for my age, and I attribute it to all of that."
