F I T 2 0 1 7 - 2 0 1 8 1 1 Age 50, Yoga East member, editor Do you do anything specific to avoid injury? "One of their favorite things to say (at Yoga East) is, 'No pain, no pain.' So you're not supposed to push yourself past your limits. If you're feeling pain, you need to back off. And they're very good about helping people make adjustments, using props, so you don't hurt yourself." What keeps you motivated? "I definitely continue to do it on a regular basis because of back issues. Yoga is really great for the bone- strengthening exercises. It has the additional mental and meditative aspect, which is also really helpful. One of the things that I always found inspiring was there were people there 10 or 20 years older than me who were so fit. That inspired me to keep going back to class because that is definitely something I want to be when I'm that age. "I think for people who don't know a lot about yoga, there are a lot of misconceptions. I think one of them is that you have to be this certain type of fitness level in order to do it. But the thing you learn very quickly is that it really is for everybody. And I think especially for people as they get older, because yoga does tend to be gentle, but it still helps with balance and bone strength and all the things that really help you age more gracefully, I would say, without injury or pain."
