"I do jiu-jitsu, and then I participate with krav maga. (A Hebrew term meaning 'combat contact,' krav maga is a self- defense system developed for the Israeli military. —Ed.) I also help the owner with the women's self-defense seminars that he does out in the community. We want to teach women how to protect themselves in real-life situations. We look at how to escape a situation — because we never want it to get to the point that they have to use this — but it's a realistic way of defending yourself and getting out of harm's way if you have to defend yourself from a weapon, a gun or knife, or if you have to defend yourself by using body positioning to get yourself safely out of the situation. We try to empower the women. I think a lot of people are intimidated whenever they hear about going to combat sports. We want to change that perspective to say that anybody can do this. It's fun." ABBY DISPONATE Do you keep a specific diet? "Absolutely. Food is fuel for me. If I eat poorly, I usually perform poorly. I eat foods high in protein, and I keep carbs in my diet — I'm not afraid of carbs. You always hear about the no-carb diet, but we're exerting a lot of energy. Whenever we do a Brazilian jiu-jitsu session, it is usually about an hour and a half, and by the end, we've done about four or five six- minute rounds. It's constant cardio, and that's the same for krav maga. Krav is about an hour long and we get drills just like we do in BJJ, and then we spar. I make sure that I eat a whole lot of different meals throughout the day. I try to stay away from a lot of processed foods. I love meal- prepping." What is your favorite cheat meal? "Honestly, I love pizza, breadsticks with cheese and beer. Anything with a lot of cheese. Give me pizza and beer and I'm a happy girl."
