F I T 2 0 1 6 - 2 0 1 7 7 FIT Two years ago, Morgan DeYoung couldn't touch her toes or do a handstand. "I swam competitively for 10 years and I cross-trained with cross country in between. Flexibility does not come easily to me," she says. She began practicing yoga in her basement on a whim, documenting the diffcult journey on social media. "I believe the human body is capable of anything," she says, "if you just believe in yourself and put in the work." The 25-year-old has certainly put in the work: Her Instagram account, the_southern_yogi, has 114,000 followers, who've watched her progress from basic poses to acro-yoga and beyond. Her frst e-book, Ab'Asanas, was released in late 2015, and her income from the book and her social- media work (along with, she says, a supportive husband) allowed her to quit her job at Starbucks and pursue yoga full-time in 2016. She's currently pushing toward a 200-hour certifcation to become a yoga instructor. How is yoga different from other sports you've done? "I went into yoga with an athlete's mindset. But it transforms you from the inside out. When I swam, I was on that team to go to the Olympics, and that was my only goal. No pain no gain. And now, it's just like, no, you don't want to hurt your body; that's so disrespectful of yourself. You don't push through the pain. You let your body rest and heal itself. Yoga has taught my body so much patience." Do you follow a particular eating plan or diet? "Everything in moderation, that's what I live by. Even Nutella." What's the best thing about being Insta-famous? "Knowing that I could go anywhere in the world and have a friendly face to greet me. I love knowing that wherever I go there's a friend I haven't met yet. It just blows my mind. I just try not to take it for granted. Like if Instagram would go away none of this would even matter, you know?" What's the worst thing about being Insta- famous? "The latest and greatest is that my eyebrows are very offensive to people. It's literally the dumbest thing, because I don't, like, clip them or wax them. I just let them grow out, and they do grow down my nose and people just…give me a heyday about it." Morgan DeYoung
