F I T 2 0 1 6 - 2 0 1 7 9 FIT Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2010, Dunton, 37, began this year doing 108 sun salutations at Yoga Mala, a yoga event at the Muhammad Ali Center. She also practices yoga at home, guided by YouTube videos, and runs when she fnds time. What's managing MS like? "I'm on a medication right now that I take once a week and I'm about to switch to one I take every two weeks, so we'll see. I also feel like working out and eating well is how I manage too, because I feel like the more I take care of myself, the less I make myself prone to stress or injuries or other issues that can exacerbate my MS." Is there anything you have to watch or limit in any way? "I'm more careful in the summer when I run because I am heat-sensitive, so I have to be easier on myself about it. But on the other hand, I can get into this weird kind of loop where it's like, oh, I'm hurting, so I should stop, but am I hurting because it's my MS telling me I'm hurting because my nerves are misfring or am I actually injured?" You're an avid cook. Would you consider yourself a healthy cook? "I think I am, even though I love to use butter and cream. I've been thinking about this a lot. I saw that Larabar commercial yesterday and I was like, wow, I guess their slogan now is 'Food made from food.' So I will use butter and I will use cream, but I try to use real food. It's amazing how much processed food and fast food I used to eat. So I'm healthier, how about that?" What's your favorite healthy thing to make? "My favorite 'healthy' dish to make is two eggs, two pieces of multigrain-and-seed toast and half an avocado. I make some version for breakfast every morning." Do you listen to music when you work out? "I have to listen to music when I run. A lot of it is — I don't know what else to call it: stripper rap. There's Outkast and Three 6 Mafa and Ying Yang Twins. It just makes me want to dance and get going." Do you have any bucket-list exercise goals? "To do the Bay to Breakers run in San Francisco, my hometown, the Honolulu Marathon, and a Disney run." Yumiko Dunton
