As we counsel patients daily who struggle with weight management and ftness, we usually come back to the same recommendation when it comes to increasing activity in a way that will beneft several areas of women's lives regardless of age. And that recommendation involves focusing on core strength. The core is the power house of the body, involving all the muscles of the torso not just the abdominal muscles. It includes the gluteus muscles, the hip and pelvic muscles, and all the muscle groups of the back and shoulders. Pretty much every single thing we do on a daily basis, even simply sitting in a chair, engages our core on some level. We spend a lot of time developing and strengthening our core when we frst learn to walk and balance as children. But as we get older our bodies go through a lot of physical changes and general wear and tear, our core strength gradually declines if we are not actively maintaining and strengthening it. For women especially, the demands on the core related to pregnancy are signifcant. A weak core is one of the major causes of low back pain, something that plagues most of us at some point in our lives. A strong core also supports good posture which decreases back pain and supports healthy respiratory function. Metabolism which naturally declines as we get older is linked, as well, to the strength of our core. The stronger our core the more effciently we burn calories, the more results we get from exercise and dietary changes we make, to control or lose weight, and an overall better physically ft you.
