In fact, Floyd Memorial stakes claim to the only Pilates Reformer exercise equipment in Southern Indiana, touting four machines. Pilates is designed to gently strengthen and elongate muscles, while focusing on the core of the body. Consistent practice of the core strengthening exercises provides support of the spinal column that can help alleviate back pain. Massage Therapist Susan Waiz is a believer. After experiencing several months of back pain associated with the constant bending required in her work, Susan found relief through Pilates. Physical Therapy sessions at Floyd Memorial Rehab taught Susan that she could reduce strain to her body by strengthening core muscles so she began attending Pilates. "Pilates did the trick," she explained. Slowly, but surely, Susan's back pain disappeared. What's more, she's started receiving compliments for her improved posture. Floyd Memorial Hospital Offering Pilates and Yoga Pilates can be done on the foor with a mat, and also using the reformer, a piece of equipment that uses spring tension and body weight to execute precise movements. The same Pilates principles are used with each, and both are gentle and can be modifed. Floyd Memorial Yoga classes include various styles which combine physical activity with breath to reduce stress, control weight, relieve lower back pain and enhance focus. Pilates Instructor Susie Stewart differentiates between the two strengthening exercises: Pilates is more movement-based and Yoga practices holding poses. Floyd Memorial's Pilates and Yoga participants can choose from daily offerings. Participants beneft greatly from the extremely small class sizes where individual attention is given to form and goals. Instructors are extensively trained in diverse styles so participants enjoy varied regimens every day of the week. Stewart also leads Pink Ribbon Pilates, offered exclusively at Floyd Memorial Rehabilitation and funded by Floyd Memorial Hospital Foundation. The classes are free to breast cancer surgery survivors and designed to facilitate recovery from breast cancer surgery including lumpectomy, mastectomy and breast cancer reconstructive surgeries. Aside from the regular class schedule, private Pilates sessions are available any weekday by appointment. To learn more, visit foydmemorial.com/exercise or call (812) 945-3440.
