ROUNDS the Arterial "bone body" of the head: The major highways that distribute blood around the head and to the heart — tapering down to very intricate and minute capillaries. There are 620 skeletal muscles, each one with a specimc origin and insertion point, function and nerve supply. Smoker's lungs: These are lungs after years of cigarette smoking. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the adverse health effects from smoking account for an estimated 443,000 deaths, or nearly one of every mve deaths, each year in the United States. A healthy brain compared with an Alzheimer's victim's shows the dead and dying nerve-cell tangles forming a web around the diseased brain. This affect causes memory loss along with other complications for those afnicted. Plastination Fantastic They say that beauty is only skin deep — and a visit to Gunther von Hagens' Body Worlds Vital exhibit at the Kentucky Science Center conmrms it. The display is a collection of skinless actual human bodies in lifelike poses, willed by donors and preserved through "plastination," a technique of infusing body parts with resin developed by von Hagens. The exhibit offers an authentic look at the body in health, distress and disease — an education of how many things are going right, and how many could go wrong. The exhibit runs through May 19th.
